I question things. I read, and I read between the lines. I try to find purpose in everything. Everything that I do, everything that I want to do. And the things that I am doing. Wearing a cloth to cover my head is something I wouldn’t have done without purpose when coming up with a stupid nickname for an email address would take me weeks. This was something to do with my appearance. I researched, I questioned and I read about the obligations of a Muslim woman, and what is asked of her. I have always been a great enthusiast: of life, purpose, religion. From that moment on, when I wore the scarf, I was just on the road to reinforce my beliefs, which drew me close to Islam; in turn to be a better human and Muslim.
Just like that, I went to school the next day with my head covered by a loose dupatta. Because I have been always a live-spirited person, I found that carrying the dupatta quite inconvenient. Running up and down the stairs, racing through the corridors became a problem. (Laugh) So, I decided in the next week or something to just wear a scarf. Now, it does intimate people. Scarf is a commitment which more often than not people are scared to commit to. One of the many reasons why people also delay to wear the hijab because they say once worn, can never be taken off. So they keep pending it. Alot of people have told me that they had this issue. My answer to them is always the same, what is important is your neeyat (intention). Decide why you want to do it. Why is it so important for you? Remember why you started when you feel scared or want to back down. And finally, there is no shame in failure.
I read about hijab, I listened to Dr.Farhat Hashmi’s lectures, I studied Islamiat in high-school and college, and question after question was answered all leading to the reinforcement of my simple decision to wear hijab for Allah. Hijab is more than a cloth. It is a persona. An identity. While people sometimes do get intimidated when they see me in my abaya and hijab – it is more than often only because they don’t understand or know me. Islam has taught me through hijab, that what matters is what is within. Go beyond the skin. So when I see someone, I do look at them but my ultimate perception of that person is through their speech, skills, conduct and intellect. I have been covering since I turned 14. I am 21 now. I have never taken the hijab off. It’s who I am. It’s what I do. My life has purpose. And that is what is most important to me. A piece of cloth that changed the way I think, that changed the way people look at me, that made me believe that there’s always more to a human being than meets the eye and oh, yeah, that modesty rocks.
