They began to bat around the idea of creating a brand that would be functional on the trail while fitting in with their existing wardrobes. When the pandemic began and freelance jobs dried up, Levy approached Rizzo about dedicating their time to that mission. “I was like, remember that idea that we had? What if we could start taking it a little bit more seriously? And that’s kind of the inception of what is now Hikerkind.” In June of 2021, the brand soft-launched with a lichen-green recycled fleece pullover dubbed Midlayer_01. At the same time, they started a series of events under the banner Hike Club, inviting women to join them on trails outside of New York City, many of them reachable by train. “We wanted to just release one piece of gear, start the hiking club, and see if what we were doing was resonating with women and if it was purposeful and if it felt like it had a place,” says Rizzo. By September, they’d sold 75% of their stock, and 75 people gathered for their end-of-season hike on Sugarloaf Mountain. Talking with women as they made their way across creeks and over rock scrambles, it was clear they weren’t alone in wanting both practical, fashionable gear and a community to enjoy it with.

A year later, Hikerkind is launching its first collection in three colorways—on sale tomorrow, June 10—named after the “triple crown” of long-distance hiking in the U.S. There’s the Continental Divide Trail, its sandstone cliffs and rocky mountains represented in shades of yellow and brown. The “green tunnel” of the Appalachian Trail shows up through shorts in a shade called Olivine and a bra top in Conifer. The Pacific Crest Trail gets into purple tones with a Morel dress and a shirt named after the washed-out pink of the steershead plant. Rizzo and Levy brought their collection to each of the regions they were inspired by, both to shoot campaign imagery and gear test. They spilled water on the pants and watched it run off the fabric, confirming that their vegetable-based wicking treatment was working. Levy breezed up Idaho’s Cervidae Peak wearing Hikerkind’s dress and established that their Econyl bra top offered the right amount of lightweight support underneath. “I think that hiking outdoor clothing has gotten very technical and they have a lot of details that are not necessary,” Levy says. “So when we were looking to create clothing, we streamlined only the necessities that you would actually have to have on trail, not any of these extremities that you’re not actually going to use.”

The best tenniswear brands are very aware of 2022’s fashion-first take on courtside dressing. After seasons dominated by high-design athleisure and balletcore, tenniscore has emerged as this year’s answer to a string of anything-can-be-core revivals inspired by classic sports aesthetics. According to industry insiders and experts creating the latest collections, there’s a logic behind this slice of inspiration. “Tennis has always been associated with elegance, including from a sartorial point of view,” says Catherine Spindler, chief brand officer of Lacoste. Spindler acknowledges that style codes are influencing traditional fashion houses and making their way far beyond the country club. Spindler points out that former tennis champion René Lacoste founded the brand in 1933 with deep roots in the sport—he developed a ball-throwing machine for training solo and later invented the polo shirt, “which has become a fashion icon adopted by all.” Now, these “sporty influenced pieces are worn in a professional environment as well as for an evening out,” she says. Plus, people are actually playing tennis, pickleball, and racquetball again. “We started to see a resurgence of people playing tennis and racquet sports during the pandemic as a way to be active and maintain social distance,” says Shannon Quarantino, vice president of e-commerce at Splits59. Now, the company is seeing “major growth” in demand for its tennis category designed to “wear on the court and after for cocktails or brunch.” So is Alo Yoga’s now-infamous Varsity tennis skirt, an influencer staple in social feeds from TikTok to Instagram. “Our skirt is feminine and fun yet still ideal for being active, incorporating integrated short pockets that can hold tennis balls for functional fashion,” says Danny Harris, one of Alo’s CEO, the brand that “offers fashion from studio to street.” Harris agrees with Spindler and Quarantino on the categories for everyone—and everywhere—appeal “from the tennis court to a café.”
