The almost sacred ritual that will play out at Leo Carlton’s presentation promises to be a never-before-witnessed blend of the metaversial and metaphysical. This young designer roams across realms connecting VR sculpting, spiritual thinking, and physical bio-materials. “The presentation will be like a witches’ circle, because my background is quite spiritual, in quite a pagan way.” Working close to nature in a lab they built in a shed on their father’s farm in Oxfordshire during lockdown, Carlton—an alum of Stephen Jones—designs, first, in their ‘ virtual studio’ wearing a VR headset to generate the organically flowing forms of their headpieces, face-jewelry, and bags. “I use Z-brush, an animation character software to clean up the forms, and then I print it out in materials like fermented corn starch, crushed oyster shell, and coffee grounds.” The result—“resembling prehistoric bones” is “a process where technology and natural plant based materials produces a wearable and ecologically-friendly outcome. This process is inclusive of all bodies.” This astonishing leap by a designer born into the worlds of gaming, tech, and sustainable consciousness introduces a fully-circular method of accessory creation, meaning that Leo Carlton pieces can be made to order, “allowing a client to customize pre-printed head fittings and body parts.”
London Fashion Week begins officially on Friday, pausing on Monday—with the entire nation—for the funeral of the late Queen. After days of intense consultation, the designer community has resolved to pull together and continue to show—some for the first time. Outside-show frivolities and inside celebrations will be absent, but still: the surprises this emerging cohort plans to land will be of a very different nature. This is the new generation of spiritually-motivated makers and inventors who’ve risen from the last two pandemic years of isolation with whole new thought-systems, and the hope of making fashion a better place. “Imagine we could be the ones to change it all.” The resonant title of Paolo Carzana’s debut show conjures everything about the collective intent of London’s newest generation. The Welsh-Italian designer has already made a huge impression with the entirely self-generated and photographed Another World collection he made alone during lockdown in his Cardiff studio last year. “This show is about going from dark to light,” he says. “My last collection was about imagining angels surrounding and protecting me in a traumatic time. This one moves through mourning towards symbols of the freedom and love we’ve won against everything we’ve come through.” Now working out of the Sarabande studios founded by Alexander McQueen, Carzana makes what he describes as “tender tailoring with strength and fragility”—the invention of the beautiful techniques he’s evolved through manipulating deadstock and naturally-dyed materials. “Without being too serious about it,” Cazana says, “I feel I want the fashion industry to change. This presentation showing my version of what we need to move towards—and how everyone I know, my friends—are changing it as well.”
The presentation debut of Irish designer Sinead O’Dwyer adds her sculpturally molded dynamic to the body-positive design movement. In common with the rising cohort of young designers, O’Dwyer is motivated by creating an antidote to distressing experiences as a trainee on the front line of the fashion business. “I saw a really horrible side of the industry in the dressing closet before shows, seeing models who came in who were actually very sick with anorexia—and then how they were transformed into this tall, glamorous runway person. It shocked me.” She quit to study at the Royal College of Art in London “to figure out what I was struggling with,” and began experimenting with “life-casting” on her women friends, sculpting molds in seaweed alginate. “My inspiration is my fit models.I’m interested in mental health, and how the fashion industry has a huge impact on young bodies, growing up, and on older peoples’ too.” O’Dwyer invented a pattern process which starts with cutting from a UK size 20 and embraces sizes 8 to 30, mitigating against the stereotypical limits of a plus-size market “that only offers a tent or an hour-glass dress. I’m obsessed with creating fitted patterns for garments like tailoring; that’s a big focus.”
