Most amazing of all—perhaps the most difficult kind of luxury or hospitality to truly pull off—is the utter grace and seamless execution of every single detail of our stay. The entire staff at the Ranch seems to instead know exactly where you are, what you’re doing, when you’ll be finished, what you’re doing next, and exactly what you’ll be needing—whether that be a ride, a fishing license, a glass of your favorite wine, or a nap—anywhere from 90 seconds to 90 minutes from the current moment. The only thing wrong with the place, really, is that we eventually had to leave it. On our final morning, Guy insisted on hiking down to the corral to say goodbye to his horse, Blue. Esme and I had a moment together watching the mountains reflected in the water off the pond near our cabin and gazebo—the latter of which was still carpeted in rose petals after a couple we’d met on our first night became engaged there the previous evening. Biba was off on a last-ditch attempt to find out about the lavender that the Ranch added to their coffee to make it taste so absurdly good.
And so it went, day after incredible day: With some expert instruction, we each shot bears, bighorn sheep, and elk with compound bows and arrows—I mean, the bows and arrows were real; the animals weren’t. We panned for (real) sapphires from the creek (we didn’t get rich, but we did find some amazing souvenirs to take home). We suited up in hip waders, learned how to cast fly rods, and took our talents down to Rock Creek, a blue-ribbon (read: world-class) trout stream that feeds into the renowned Clark Fork River: Guy caught his first fish within seconds of his fly landing on the water and his second not long afterward, almost making me think that the Ranch paid the fish to sacrifice themselves to their guests; Biba caught a good-sized trout in-between Guy’s two—and I walked away from the afternoon with absolutely nothing, putting the screws to my paid-fish theory. (Esme, caring not to fish, spent her time in a creekside hammock, leisurely sketching.) We saddled up together and then rode our horses separately for hours (Biba and I went up into the mountains for truly epic, panoramic views with our guide; Esme and Guy stayed nearer the corral for hands-on instruction on riding, trotting, turning, and jumping—and it’s worth noting here that while all the offerings here are executed to perfection, the equestrian program is particularly incredible). On another day, we made our way with the rest of the guests at sunset to see the Ranch’s 70-strong herd of horses run from the corrals out into their edenic pasture (and we were close enough to the action to feel the ground tremble beneath our feet). We ate everything from pecan granola to chilaquiles and bacon and eggs for breakfast, and everything from barbequed Carolina pork with Oaxacan sauce and collard greens to ricotta agnolotti to profiteroles and huckleberry ice cream for dinner and dessert. In between all of that, we popped by the antiques-filled, centrally located Blue Barn Canteen for restorative coffees and beers and snacks and help-yourself candy and a quick shady hang over a game of Battleship. (There’s a lot more in the offering as well, from hiking and mountain biking to a ropes course and zip lines—and, in the winter, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, ice skating, and downhill skiing a short ride away.)
And then, alas, we rejoined the so-called civilized world again, if a bit against our collective wills. Now back home in Brooklyn, we’re city-slicked again. But Guy still wakes up every day and says good morning to Blue, standing amid the rest of the herd in the corral on the bedroom-wall-sized poster we had made of a snapshot we took at The Ranch at Rock Creek. Being Jameela Jamil, even when no one is looking, is really quite close to the real deal. It’s 7:30 p.m. for the L.A.-based star of The Good Place and she is in between apartments, with boxes and empty bookshelves dressing up her Zoom screen as we settle into our cross-continental call. A sequined blazer, very Tahani from The Good Place, hangs on her shoulders as extra armor for the day, and a perfect liner cuts her high cheekbones just so. I, on the contrary, paint an abject picture with my third coffee in hand at 7:30 a.m. and “eye bags the size of testicles,” to borrow a Jamil phrase that’s equal parts wild and wit, shock and awe.
