But my understanding is that when African slaves were shipped over to the colonies, the slavers had purposefully broken groups of slaves from the same African kingdoms or from the same area, and mixed them with people from other areas. So the slaves did not share a common language or culture, which effectively curbed their ability to escape or organize rebellions. These African slaves were forced to communicate to their white owners, and other slaves using English. They’re forced to adopt white people’s culture and way of life. They’re forced to convert to Christianity. African Americans had always been segregated from the White community even after the civil rights movement put an end to segregation. African Americans have this shared ancestry and history, which had grown into a unique culture. Of course, there are subcultures and overlapping within African American culture. African Americans are not a monolith group.
