My take is that it’s a “dress shirt” or “long-sleeve buttoned shirt”, UNLESS it has collar ends which “button down” to the shirt front; then and only then is it a “button down shirt”. Of course, lots of people will think I’m an old curmudgeon on this issue. I also believe that shoe sellers shouldn’t call something an “oxford” if, like the tan shoe on the right, it’s really a “derby”. Nail the fit. …Wear a more casual/stylish, non-business suit. …Wear a less formal shirt. …Mind the collar. …Undo two buttons. …Add visual interest with other accessories. …Shine your shoes. I’m going to say there’s a big myth out there especially here in the United States. We think that untucking your shirt is going to make you look better, and is going to cover up a little bit of excess weight in the midsection.
Button downs are usually hung, come in a number of patterns, shorter in length, sometimes have tiny buttons on the collars, and are in the casual section of a store. One thing to keep in mind is the length of the shirt. If the shirt is too long (be it a dress shirt or a button down), it can throw off your proportions and look unflattering. A nice rule of thumb for length: the shirt should fall near the middle of your zipper. I’m assuming you’ve seen some guys wear a shirt untucked with a blazer and want to try the look? They are most likely wearing a button down. If done wrong, this style can look sloppy. Avoid looking sloppy by following the length rule and go for a fitted blazer with a fun texture or pattern. A blazer that looks like it came from a suit might throw off the casual untucked look, however a fun blazer will make it look like it was done with intention.
