Of course, but that is not interpreted as harming white people, since blacks are one of the Designated Victim Groups, pretty high in the hierarchy too. Nobody’s looking at Japanese wearing suits as case of cultural appropriation from whites, Filipinos eating pizza as cultural appropriation from Italians or Brazilians playing soccer or watching television as cultural appropriation from Europeans. Those are interpreted as part of global culture of unknown origin, but anything going the opposite way is interpreted as theft, because again, the victim groups are preconceived in this worldview. It only goes one way: whites are bad, so nobody’s really looking at whites from appropriation angle; all the other ethnic groups are supposed to be harmed by whites, so copying some cultural ideas from them is supposed to be a greater part of cultural theft, while facts indicate that if anything, there’s massive copying in the other direction. There’s a mix of inferiority complex and pathological altruism at the bottom of this: had whites not invented suits, soccer, pizza and television, cultural appropriation would not have even arisen as an issue.
Also in my experience, most people who talk about cultural appropriation as if its a bad thing are not members of the cultures they presume to be protecting. Suppose I move to Japan, learn perfect Japanese, marry a Japanese person, become a citizen, and adopt traditional Japanese attire, and I know what everything signifies. Lastly, my focus through November is ridding the White House of its current infestation. Republicans use stuff like this to mock and ridicule Democrats—to make us look like silly, shallow, people who constantly examine others for any sign of political heterodoxy. Rock and Roll, R and B music, Country, Bluegrass, Blues and many other forms of American music have African-American origins or roots.
Perhaps not many of us would like to admit it, but we have adopted some African speaking habits. Words like eish oh dear are commonly heard and a few others too like yebo yes. We also enjoy African food. Maize meal is consumed in high quantities by blacks and whites. But I’d say that South Africans are more influenced by other cultures such as Indian when it comes to food. Sadly, I think that most whites avoid too much African influence. This is a pity because learning African languages is very rewarding and useful for communication. We whites tend to live in our own world forgetting that we are in a rich African society. The only thing that is wrong is mockery. Wearing blackface is an example of mockery. Using slur words is mockery. Some comedy routines verge on mockery. But enjoying African American culture: go ahead. What’s wrong with it
