Pyer Moss is set to unveil their first couture collection on Thursday, making Kerby Jean-Raymond the first black American designer to enter the haute couture calendar. Alas, the rain prevented the show from happening, but it has now been rescheduled for next Saturday. Kerby Jean Raymond’s choice of venue for his first Pyer Moss couture show is as historic as it is iconic. The designer – whose show on Thursday was postponed by a storm and rescheduled for Saturday – decided to choose Villa Lewaro in Irvington, New York, the estate of America’s first self-made female millionaire, Madam CJ Walker. Villa Lewaro was commissioned by A’Lelia Walker, daughter of Madam C.J. Walker, and designed by Vertner Woodson Tandy, the first black architect registered in New York. Its location is about a mile from other notable properties of the American billionaire such as the Rockefeller Estate in Kykuit and the Lyndhurst mansion.
The property itself has Italianate architectural influences and is furnished with the same aesthetic. Some details include bronze and marble accents, plush paintings, and tapestries. The name Villa Lewaro derives from the first syllables of A’Leila Walker’s previous name, Leila Walker Robinson. Madam C. J. Walker intends for Villa Lewaro not only to be her home but also a place for the community. In a 1917 interview with The New York Times about her mansion, Madam CJ Walker – the wealthiest black woman in New York City at the time – said, “I’m not a millionaire, but I hope to be a black woman one day, not for the money, but because I can do a lot to help my race. When the beauty mogul lived in the 34-room mansion, she hosted gatherings for Harlem Renaissance minds like James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, WEB Du Bois, and Langston Hughes.
