If he were to play it when he’s 15 or something, he wouldn’t be able to control it. The hype’s gonna be big, classmates will keep on encouraging him to play and he won’t be able to stop. If you let him experience what video games are now and teach him when he should stop playing, etc he will able to restrain himself. It helps with hand eye coordination, abstract problem solving, reading, math, budget management and social skill development. Now, you can do whatever you want, they are your kid, but I think you have deprived your child of a great educational tool in my opinion. I’m female and have been gaming since I could hold a controller at 2, and then graduated to computer when my mother bought us a family PC. If you’re worried about violence, gore, or adult content, you honestly shouldn’t be. There are so many games today and from the past that are targeted towards audiences of all ages. Video games have always been safe for every age. You just have to look at them to know which age range they’re targeted for. You can actually look up the game, or gameplay of it on Youtube, to see if it’s too adult for your child, or you could do something easier and just go by the ESRB Ratings games have. I would personally give a look at the game itself myself, because I know what my kid can or cannot handle, but the Ratings are super easy if you don’t have time. Rated E 10+: I don’t think there’s many games with this rating being put out anymore, because most games just use rated T for Teen instead to make it easier, but this means ages 10 and up are more suited for this rating.

Rated T: For Teens. These games bring in some mature themes, but don’t push it into too adult. They also usually bring in violence, but typically not a lot of blood and gore. Rated M: For Mature. So, for adults. This rating has adult language, adult themes, and can often have a lot of gore, violence, torture, ect. This is meant for people who can handle things like this. (Personally, I’ve been playing a lot of Rated Ms since I was 12 or 13, because my parents knew I was mature enough to handle it, but if you’re unsure if your son can then you might not want to let him play a Rated M game.) Rated A: Adults only. I rarely see any big title games with this rating, but this is basically the naughty game rating. If you come across any like this, it’s best to keep your 11 year old away. I’d suggest you start letting your son play Rated T games. He’s close enough to teen years that he should be able to handle Rated T games without issue. And if any issues do arise, talk to him about it. Don’t be afraid to learn more about gaming as a way to get to know your kid better when he does game. It’s good when parents take the time to try to figure out what their kids actually like, and games are a huge thing these days.

The video game industry is so huge. You are telling me that out of the millions of games, all of them aren’t suitable for your 11-year-old child? You know what was the safe age to let him start playing? About 5–6 years ago. I am no expert into when a child is old enough to play harmless games like Minecraft (obviously, if they are explicit games, you may have a point), but 11 years old is way too late. So hurry up and set up your computer and teach him what “WASD” is. Edit: First off, wow! Thanks for all the support on this answer! Amazing, really. That said, I have read the comments, and here is the main point that most people brought up: I get that point, but he is already interested in video games. Not introducing them properly will only let him play them behind the backs of his parents, and he will be more likely to become addicted. Easiest way to avoid this is to introduce them to him. Play with him. But also teach him how to use his time wisely. Playing video games is not bad, but playing too many video games IS. Teach him that. I hope this addresses that point.
