Edit: I thought of another thing regarding aiming. Here is what I do to make sure I’m lined up in the correct direction. Stand directly behind the ball looking down the fairway, and see the exact spot where you’d like the ball to land. Draw a line from that spot back towards the tee box and find something on the ground in this line 5′ to 10′ in front of your ball. A broken tee, a weed, an odd tuft of grass, anything you can use as a reference to that line. Now take your stance and line up normally, your driver should be pointed directly at, and the club face should be exactly perpendicular to that marker. You may find as I did that you are often unknowingly aiming in the wrong direction which will doom your drive before you even swing.
Think of it like the target markings and arrows on a bowling lane. Bowlers don’t aim at the pins, they don’t even look at the pins, they are looking 10′ down the lane at those markers, and aiming for an exact location relative to one of them.(this technique helps with long putts also) There is no penalty.
