During this ongoing COVID-19 virus, most students and parents will have to wait until regular school returns to determine if this hoodie ban will apply to their school. They shouldn’t be I love hoodies and wear exclusively hoodies and t shirts depending on the weather I own 8 different hoodies ( In case all I want to wear only hoodies on a given week and one thick one in case it’s cold but I’m live in Florida and thats rare) and most are thin and plain and just for a quick wear. I never understood why hoodies are frowned upon yeah there’s definitely a time and place for them but my purpose of wearing my hoodie isn’t to hide my face, rob someone, or to look deceiving. Also wearing a hoodie means I can now sleep anywhere with the convenience of my long sleeve shirt with a head blanket. There convenient, comfortable, and if an admin or professor tells me to take my Hood off during a lecture I ablidge but anywhere else I smile and pretend I didn’t hear them.
Because when they do, and they keep the hood up (which they want to do and is why they have the hoodie), they are effectively ‘hiding’ from class participation. They never make eye contact, and we suspect they are not engaging at all with the class material. I know some young people find comfort in hiding themselves from the world, but it’s just something we all have to get over if we are to join adult society. Your teacher is actually doing you a favor if he/she doesn’t let you do this. This is a generalization since hoodies are not being banned at all schools in the U.S. Depending on where your school is located, grade level, school dress code, safety/security measures, law enforcement recommendations, gang level activity, & how hoodies are associated with gangs will probably determine if hoodies are being banned from being worn at your particular school or in your school district.
The guards at my university would heavily suggest that hoods should be down while on premises (unless weather prohibits). This is because it’s a small campus and they remember all faces, and it’s the best way of ensuring security. One time I was playing Ingress (the original Pokemon Go) with hoods on, at 3 AM, and the guard promptly told me to take the hood down, with that explanation. I also suspect that hoodies can be easily used to conceal your face if you are up to no good, like vandalizing. UPDATE: I do not recommend doing weird things while covering your face. Your visuals are restricted. See the following tweet. (Warning: Video with sound.) School Districts have the responsibility to provide a safe environment and an orderly environment that is conducive to learning. If clothing , hairstyles or wearing gang colors is disruptive, then if it is not controlled, it will make it hard to focus on lessons and learning in the school. Students will not get the quality of education that they deserve and their parents expect. It is in all of our interest that American students are as well, if not better educated than other countries’ kids. I know that many people who do not work in schools or with the youth cannot understand why wearing a hoodie should be a deal. I know that many kids don’t understand and think it unfair. When hoodies became such a fashion rage in the early 1990s, and before my school had uniforms there was no prohibition on hoodies. I was a teacher, 10 years in 5th grade, 10 years in middle school, and I saw quite a bit in my 20 years. When my 5th grade students would wear a hoodie, they insisted on wearing the hood in class, during lessons, nearly concealing the entirety of their faces. That makes it hard for the teacher to gauge if they are following along, confused or simply not paying any attention whatsoever. Sorry folks, the hoodie cover somehow made my little guys and gals feel that they were somehow invisible and checked out. Inevitably, they would get very warm and sleepy. Then, the next step in the “ hoodie behavior pattern” was that their hot, heavy noggins and blurry eyes would pull their little heads like a magnet to rest on top of their desk top. Then they were in a rotten mood and were not about to care about what is happening in class and working on their assignment. Let alone, actually TRYING TO LEARN NEW MATERIAL.
