I’m still perplexed by Kim Kardashian’s love for face coverings. At the Met Gala in 2021, she opted for a full bodysuit that covered her face, making her an instantly recognizable shadow on the red carpet. That same year, she walked out in a leather gimp suit, and soon after, a black mask with eye and mouth holes cut out. Perhaps one of the most fascinating moments was when she went to the fall 2022 Balenciaga haute couture dinner this past July wearing a full face shield. The piece was reminiscent of the freakish creature from Alien, bulbous and antlike. Still, it became a signature in the rest of the fall haute couture 2022 look books, appearing on every single model, transforming them all into anonymous ’ciaga Stormtroopers.
Curious as to what the experience would be like, I decided to wear a face shield to the spring 2023 collections in New York. Mine was not like Balenciaga’s. It was not designed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG F1 Applied Science. Nor was it created with ink-tinted, coated polyurethane. There were no anti-fog capabilities nor was there breathable comfort thanks to several months of testing. No, my face shield was instead crafted from flimsy plastic and purchased for a mere $15 on Amazon.com. Nothing was engineered to perfection here. Despite my mask’s considerable differences, I was fascinated by the concept of being anonymous at Fashion Week. That is what a mask or a shield is for, right? To disguise? To hide? I was in love with the idea of covertly slinking away in and out of shows. Literally…unbothered. Then again, would I remain so under the radar? Trotting along to shows in a big piece of black plastic covering my face? I knew I’d get stares, but hopefully no one would know it was me.
To test it out, I decided to wear the face shield to the Maryam Nassir Zadeh show, which was held at a tiny park downtown. For the uninitiated, the MNZ girls have incredible cheekbones, love showing their midriffs, and probably have a life pass to Souen. The clothes are free and effortless, and there’s probably a nipple insouciantly showing here and there. It’s hardly a place for a face shield. In order to really hide myself, I tried to dress differently head to toe. My friends at shows would recognize me: I often wear freaky-print pants and a lot of color. This time, I went the muted route, opting for a black Godsmack tank and a pair of striped pants by Weekday, also black. I did my hair differently (ponytail!) and switched my vintage Louis Vuitton diaper bag out for a vintage black suede bag. To truly disguise myself, I opted for a pair of vintage Kieselstein-Cord rimless sunglasses and a black disposable face mask that I wore under the shield. I was convinced that no one would recognize me.
