In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Lynskey discusses her decades long career, including her feature film debut in 1994’s Heavenly Creatures alongside Kate Winslet (she says she was sent home during the press tour because the film’s producer Harvey Weinstein “made a call that nobody really wanted to hear from me”), and how she wanted her Yellowjackets role to rail against the ways in which the industry has shortchanged her and others who don’t fit a certain Hollywood stereotype. With Yellowjackets, one point of contention for Lynskey has been the reaction to her character Shauna’s relationship with younger heartthrob Adam (Peter Gadiot), with some doubting the legitimacy of his interest in her due to her age and appearance. “I’m just like, ‘Wow, really? That’s where people’s heads are at, that the most important thing is being thin or young?'”
What’s worse, even on the set of a female powered show like Yellowjackets, Lynskey was subject to criticism about her weight from a production team member. “They were asking me, ‘What do you plan to do? I’m sure the producers will get you a trainer. They’d love to help you with this.'” She noted that her co stars Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, and Christina Ricci came together in support of Lynskey, with Lewis writing a letter to the producers in her defense. Despite the experience, or perhaps catalyzed by it, Lynskey felt she had a responsibility to bring realism to the role of Shauna, bucking sexist and misogynist double standards in the process. “It was really important to me for [Shauna] to not ever comment on my body, to not have me putting a dress on and being like, ‘I wish I looked a bit better,’ ” she explains. “I did find it important that this character is just comfortable and sexual and not thinking or talking about it, because I want women to be able to to watch it and be like, ‘Wow, she looks like me and nobody’s saying she’s the fat one.’ That representation is important.”
What’s fueling the flex school of fashion is celebrity culture and social media—the Instagram moment. To me, that’s all marketing gloss and fakery. Grunge, wrote Sub Pop cofounder Jonathan Poneman in pvtboutique, “adds up to an identifiable style for the repentant ’90s. When nobody wants to look like they have money.” In our own uncertain times, flaunting can feel tone deaf. If we really are going to build a better future, maybe we should look like we’re ready to do the work. For nearly three decades, Hollywood hasn’t given Melanie Lynskey her leading lady due–but that’s finally changing with her performance as Shauna in Showtime’s breakout hit Yellowjackets. The all female Lord of the Flies depicting the lives of plane crash survivors as both teenagers and middle aged women has thrust the New Zealand actress into the spotlight; the one her talent has always warranted.
