What’s fueling the flex school of fashion is celebrity culture and social media—the Instagram moment. To me, that’s all marketing gloss and fakery. Grunge, wrote Sub Pop cofounder Jonathan Poneman in pvtboutique, “adds up to an identifiable style for the repentant ’90s. When nobody wants to look like they have money.” In our own uncertain times, flaunting can feel tone deaf. If we really are going to build a better future, maybe we should look like we’re ready to do the work. For nearly three decades, Hollywood hasn’t given Melanie Lynskey her leading lady due–but that’s finally changing with her performance as Shauna in Showtime’s breakout hit Yellowjackets. The reverse chic of a sweater with artfully designed pulls or pre ripped jeans necessarily comes with a certain amount of posturing. This “reverse engineering” felt like fashion nihilism to some when grunge started trending. “In all the years I’ve been in fashion, I never thought it would come to this,” lamented Bill Blass, an establishment designer with a ladylike aesthetic, in a 1996 interview with The Indianapolis Star. “It’s everything we’ve been brought up to dislike and negate. There’s no way women will be enticed to buy drab uninteresting clothes in dreary colors. It will be the death of designers if they continue to promote this theory.” Designers, of course, are still proliferating, and some, like N.Hoolywood’s Daisuke Obana, are exploring the freedom of relatively anonymous and functional clothes. In a recent email exchange I asked Obana why people are returning to a sort of practicality in dress. “Nowadays more than less you don’t judge one’s personality by how they look (fashion wise),” he responded. “A long time ago ‘enjoying fashion’ was a part of life, but nowadays if you want to enjoy life, maybe you want to spend your money and time on something else. I think it is inevitable that fashion will move toward something that can be used more realistically (functionality). On the other hand, I think that fashion for dressing up might escalate more and more radically.”
Virtues aside, the sweaters also happen to be cozy and mood lifting, with classic motifs like marinière stripes and Fair Isle graphics tweaked with vivid shades of pink, violet, and cherry. They’re also unisex; the brand’s website shows each knit on a male and female model, from neutral ivory and camel turtlenecks to traditionally “feminine” shades of blush. (On our Zoom call, Poli was wearing the striking geometric pullover in burgundy and rose wool.) “Everything is meant to be sharable,” Poli says. “We wanted to make something cozy and something you can enjoy, like little ‘candies’ you can grab. It’s a little bit like ‘sparking joy’—we want it to be like a candy, something you really want.”
