We then realized that it might be worthwhile to look back at this “Lost Season” to try to bring back some of the things we missed — maybe just pictures from the gallery and contextual sections like this — to analyze if there can be any parallels drawn with the state of men’s clothing today. After all, we were back then (we hope now) of a historic disruption that affected almost every corner of a global society. And because the shape of fashion is a symptom of society, when society changes rapidly, fashion is reshaped logically. Furthermore, 2009 was a year Joe Biden entered the White House, albeit in a predefined, changed capacity. Back then, regrettably, I wasn’t around to report on the season either: It wasn’t until just after the spring 2010 menswear show, Emma Tucker, now editor of The Sunday Times, and then is my boss on The Times.
Between the peak of US home sales in February 2007 and the unraveling of the spike that led to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the collapse of September 2008, many heartbreaking events created many painful consequences. One of them, tiny in life’s grand scheme but increasingly remarkable to us, is that Style.com, the forerunner of the still-beloved Vogue Runway, ran into some headwinds — and the coverage of our menswear (always the showpiece, let’s face it) is the main victim. All of our fall 2009 collection images and accompanying Tim Blanks reviews for our menswear appear to have been removed from Style. Typically when it comes to fashion, you always look forward, only rarely can you stop to look back. But the lockdowns of recent months have given us enough time to fully notice this absence from our rather lousy comprehensive archive of 21st-century fashion shows.
The original version, in London, had my life-altering brainwave send some unqualified klutz from the feature desk to womenswear on behalf of a fashion colleague on maternity leave.
